What does ‘impact’ mean in tourism – and how do you make it measurable?

How do you make tourism impact measurable? During our keynote for Tourism Flanders, Route 2030 provided structure and methodology for impact.

Tourism has long since ceased to be just about visitor numbers or economic returns. The question is increasingly being asked: what impact do we leave behind?

Tourism Flanders wants to inspire organizations to look beyond simply organizing activities. They want to create not only experiences but also social added value—for nature, heritage, residents, and businesses.

Route 2030 offers keynotes and inspirational sessions on sustainability, impact, ESG, and strategic anchoring. This keynote for Tourism Flanders focused on one question: what does impact really mean? And how do you make it concrete?

Impact as a compass for the tourism sector

The keynote address took place at a unique location: the Madeleine Church in Bruges. A place symbolic of meaning, community, and legacy. This setting reinforced the core message: impact is about added value that extends beyond the tangible and the immediate.

In tourism, impact does not only mean:

  • how many people you reach

  • how much turnover you generate

But also:

  • how you contribute to local communities

  • how to strengthen nature and heritage

  • how to stimulate behavioral change

  • how to leave a region better than you found it

What exactly is impact?

During the keynote we started with the definition.

Impact is the difference you make — positive or negative — in the long run.

In a tourism context this involves:

  • ecological impact (climate, biodiversity, raw materials)

  • social impact (liveability, inclusion, employment)

  • economic impact (local added value, resilience)

  • cultural impact (identity, heritage, meaning)

Defining impact more broadly than just economic growth provides a different compass for decisions.

How do you make impact concrete and measurable?

Impact often remains an abstract concept. That's why we put theory into practice during the keynote.

We addressed questions such as:

  • How do you determine which impact is relevant for your organization?

  • How do you link impact to clear objectives?

  • How do you make effects visible through indicators and measurements?

We provided methods that help organizations to:

  • to map their current impact

  • to determine priorities

  • to formulate targeted actions

  • to make progress measurable

Impact only becomes directional when it is linked to choices, KPIs and follow-up.

How do you increase your impact?

Achieving impact is one step. Increasing impact requires strategy.

During the keynote we highlighted three levers:

1. Focus and priority

Don't try to do everything at once, but choose where you really make a difference.

2. Partnerships

Impact grows when organizations collaborate with local partners, entrepreneurs, and communities.

3. Story and communication

Transparent communication about results strengthens trust and support.

This way, impact becomes not a marketing term, but a shared ambition.

From inspiration to action

The session combined inspiring examples with practical tools and interactive reflection. Participants didn't just listen—they were challenged to reflect on their own role in the system.

Because impact starts with awareness, but only becomes meaningful when it is translated into concrete choices.

Impact as a lasting movement

With this initiative, Tourism Flanders demonstrates that the sector is ready to look beyond traditional success indicators.

Not more tourism, but better tourism. Not just growth, but meaningful growth.

Route 2030 provided structure, language, and methodology during this keynote — so that impact does not remain a vague ideal, but a guiding compass for organizations.
